The Houston Astros are at it again. In January, they signed closer Josh Hader, the best closer on the free-agent market. Now, according to sources briefed on their discussions, they are engaged in serious pursuit of reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell.
Snell threw four simulated innings on Friday in Seattle in front of scouts from teams including the Giants and Astros, per a source. Those in attendance were said to be impressed.
Astros owner Jim Crane coveted Snell and Hader during last season's trade deadline but lamented afterward that the duo never got on the market. The Astros have been the buzz of the baseball world this weekend following reporting that indicated the club was in serious pursuit of the top remaining free agent, reigning NL Cy Young winner Snell.
The Astros are facing various questions around the health of their starting rotation, which seems to thin with each passing day. José Urquidy's forearm strain may have predated the Astros' pursuit of Snell, signaling how the club views a starting rotation that seems to thin with each passing day.
